Core Workout for Your Soul

By Pastor Darryn Belieu

Workout for the Soul

For a positive workout physically, you have to work the core.

Wiki says - In anatomy, the core refers, in its most general of definitions, to the body minus the legs and arms.[1]Functional movements are highly dependent on the core, and lack of core development can result in a predisposition to injury.

Academy of sports medicine says:

Like the core of an apple, the core of the body provides a stable platform for our arms and legs to produce efficient movement and force, and is where our center of gravity is located. Because the core encompasses more than just our abs or lower back, effective core training should consist of more than just abdominal or lower-back exercises.  Also, the muscles of the core can be divided into distinct categories that have to work together to ensure proper movement and function.  Some of the core muscles, especially those located closest to the spine, are primarily responsible for providing stability or preventing excessive movement that could place increased stress on our spine. Other core muscles, generally the larger and more visible muscles in the mirror, are primarily responsible for generating movement.

That center of your body will hold everything else together in health and strength. In the same way, we need “centering” in our spiritual lives, a workout that develops a strong core.

To build a strong core, you need a good spiritual workout.

• Turn off:

TV, radio, news, sports radio, and talk shows. Don’t dwell on negative media images and words. If it’s your job and you need to know, then control the times. When you’re not working or you’ve learned what you need to know, turn it off.

Don’t keep your mind open to the stress, restlessness and rebellion of the culture.

• Turn on:

Worship - or Teachings and messages of faith, peace and power. ie: anything that is UPLIFTING!
Start with the messages of your own pastor and leaders you know.

Romans 10:17 “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God”

• Read

One chapter of Proverbs every morning. (31 books - 30-31 days)
Read a chapter (or two or more) of Psalms every evening.
(if you read 5 chapters of Psalms every day, you will read Psalms 12 times a year!)

Proverbs will give you wisdom for the day and get courage working in your heart and soul
Psalms will help you rest, and refresh you as you sleep.

• Encourage Others!

1 thessalonians 5:11 Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.

Hebrews 10:24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works

Speak life into those around you.
Be connected to people around you. Go out of your way to say something positive.

Your own heart will believe the sound of your voice, you will be encouraged as you encourage, and your spirit man will soar.

• Pray:

For yourself, for your friends and family, for those in authority
for people you may not even know around the world going through great trials... like the pastors in Iran

Prayer produces intimacy with God, with those you pray with, and with those for whom you are praying.

Prayer centers the heart.

• Declare

Declare faith over your life!

Words have creative power. Pray God’s Word over yourself.

Psalm 37. Read it aloud, over you, over your family, your business.

Insert your name, the names of your family members, as you read it like a prayer to the Lord.

Declare for ME:

Psalm 37:

9 For evildoers shall be cut off; But those who wait on the LordThey shall inherit the earth.

10 For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more; Indeed, I will look carefully for his place, But it shall be no more.

11 But I shall inherit the earth, And I shall delight myself in the abundance of peace.

12 The wicked plots against me, And gnashes at me with his teeth.

13 The Lord laughs at him, For He sees that his day is coming.

14 The wicked have drawn the sword and have bent their bow, To cast down the poor and needy, To slay me because I am of upright conduct.

15 Their sword shall enter their own heart, And their bows shall be broken.

He is faithful to perform His Word!!!

• Meditate

Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Meditate on the Word of God.

That means think about it on purpose and with deep intent.
Find one verse of Scripture each morning to think about deeply.

During the day, trigger your mind to think about the good things God has done in your life.

Write in a journal words of life, peace, questions, prayers and answers to your prayers.

Keep it nearby to encourage yourself when you need it.

• Attend

Hebrews 10:25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

• Listen

Listen to worship - or Christian music.

You set the atmosphere of your home just by the music you play.

When you’re going through a tough time, put on earphones and listen to Scripture or to select songs of praise that soothe your soul and boost your spirit.

• Do

Do the smart, wise, and godly  things in your job, career, school, family and friendships.

Be on time (means 5 minutes early) for work, meetings, church etc..

Help meet the needs of others.

• Decrease

decrease debt as fast as possible and never get into debt again.

Streamline and simplify your life.

Learn the level of your capacity... don’t try to live like the Jones’ (no matter what that means)

• Tithe

Tithe and give regularly.

This is God’s system for financial health that works so well, even secular experts advise it.

Get into God’s system of finance by getting out of the cultural norms of success, money, life and things.
